Clinic of Neurosurgery, University Hospital "N. I. Pirogov ”was founded in 1962. To this day it remains among the leading neurosurgical structures in Bulgaria.
The Neurosurgery Clinic has 70 beds distributed in 3 wards covering the entire spectrum of neurosurgical pathology.
Clinic of Neurosurgery, University Hospital "N. I. Pirogov ”is unique in its organization, structure and mode of operation, high-tech, leading for the country medical unit. The clinic provides 24/7 emergency, planned, outpatient and hospital setting, competent, highly qualified neurosurgical care and care for victims and patients of all age groups.
As of 2013, the neurosurgery clinic has 70 inpatient beds, including 12 resuscitation beds.
The only department for emergency neurosurgical care in childhood operates here.
More than 28,000 people seek help at the Neurosurgery Clinic every year.
More than 3,300 people remained in treatment.
The Neurosurgery Clinic has a multidisciplinary team of specialists with extensive practical experience, qualifications and competence for the treatment of a wide range of diseases affecting the nervous system, and more generally - the head as a whole: neurosurgeons, neurologists, maxillofacial surgeons, specialists in anesthesiology intensive care, internist, physiotherapist and rehabilitator, eye and ENT specialist. The scale of the hospital and the wide range of treatable diseases make it possible for physicians from other specialties (abdominal and thoracic surgery, orthopedics, traumatology, etc.) to be quickly involved in the healing process when needed.
The Neurosurgery Clinic provides treatment for the full spectrum of emergency and planned diseases of the nervous system, which include:
- treatment of tumor diseases (neuro-oncology),
- treatment of spinal diseases (spinal surgery),
- treatment of vascular diseases (vascular neurosurgery),
- treatment of neurosurgical diseases in children (pediatric neurosurgery),
- treatment of pain, epilepsy, etc. (functional neurosurgery),
- treatment of injuries and emergencies (neurotraumatology),
- treatment of isolated and combined facial - maxillofacial injuries (maxillofacial surgery),
- treatment of neurological diseases (neurology),
- Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation.
The clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art and high-tech equipment, which are used daily for the treatment of diseases in all areas of modern neurosurgery, with the maximum patient safety and the lowest possible risk of complications. The apparatus includes: operating microscopes, operating microscope with a module for fluorescence, intraoperative ultrasound, endoscopic equipment, ultrasonic aspirator, specialized microsurgical instruments, sets for spinal surgery, mobile X-ray equipment, their means of inspection, living conditions for the sick.
Equally important for the complete treatment of such a wide range of neurosurgical diseases is the organizational structure of the Clinic of Neurosurgery of UMBALSM “NI. Which is the following:
- Department of Neurosurgery for Adults,
- Department of Neurosurgery for Children,
- Department of Spinal Neurosurgery,
- Department of Neuroreanimation
- Operating unit,
- Diagnostic and consulting unit with an office.
Provision of complete neurosurgical care would be impossible without the development of active scientific activity. The scientific output of the clinic - dissertations, monographs, co-authorship in manuals, textbooks and books, development of topics under the programs of the Health Ministry, the Ministry of Education and Science, and other ministries, publications in journals and collections, reports on scientific forums in the country and abroad, from 1962 to nowadays over a thousand titles, four inventions and 10 rationalizations have been created. In recent years, there have been three large scale internationally funded scientific projects funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, mainly in the field of neuro-oncology and tumor banking.
Along with the daily workload in the whole variety of planned and emergency neurosurgical pathology, the Clinic has a leading role for the country in the introduction and use of the following diagnostic and therapeutic activities:
- Immunofluorescence methods for intraoperative localization of infiltrative brain tumors - for the first time in Bulgaria.
- Treatment of diseases of the spine (disc hernia, osteoporotic and traumatic fracture, etc.) by minimally invasive methods of treatment: percutaneous vertebroplasty, coblation, etc.
The clinic has created and operates the country's first neurosurgical tumor tissue bank - a major infrastructure for research and improvement of the treatment of patients with central nervous system tumors. There is considerable international interest in the fabric and the experience gained in organizing it, and joint research and research has been carried out with Europe's leading scientific units;
Intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring in cranial and spinal operations - a modern method of controlling iatrogenic tissue damage in tumor lesions, intramedullary tumors, peripheral nerve involvement near the functional areas of the brain
Use of "awake craniotomy" as a method of treating brain tumors near functionally important areas.
